Why I’m Running I love this community. Like so many of you, I’ve chosen to build my life and raise my family here because Afton offers something increasingly rare—a place where neighbors know one another, small businesses are part of the community, and the natural beauty of the St. Croix Valley is woven into everyday life. Over the past several years, I’ve become deeply involved in our community—not only as a resident, but by attending council and planning meetings, volunteering on city committees, supporting local organizations, and working alongside neighbors who care deeply about Afton’s future. I believe Afton’s best days are ahead of us. Those experiences have given me a firsthand understanding of what works well—and where we can do better. We don’t have to choose between preserving our heritage and embracing the future. We can do both. By respecting our residents, supporting local businesses, strengthening families, and building a City Hall that listens first and collaborates openly, we can ensure Afton remains the community we love for generations to come..
Afton’s rural character, scenic beauty, historic downtown, and close-knit neighborhoods are what make this community unlike any other. Preserving Afton doesn’t mean preventing change—it means making thoughtful decisions that protect what we love while preparing responsibly for the future. My priorities include: Preserving our rural character and natural beauty. Protecting the St. Croix River and open spaces. Supporting parks, trails, and community gathering places. Planning responsibly for future generations.
One of my greatest concerns is ensuring Afton remains a place where families can continue their story. Whether it’s helping seniors age in place, allowing the next generation to remain on family property, or creating opportunities for young families to stay in our community, our policies should strengthen—not separate—families. When families stay, Afton keeps its history, traditions, and character.
Downtown Afton is the front porch of our community—a place where neighbors gather, visitors discover our town, and local businesses give Afton its unmistakable character. Our local businesses give Afton its personality and make it a destination for residents and visitors alike. As mayor, I’ll work to: Support locally owned businesses. Encourage thoughtful investment downtown. Simplify permitting where possible. Promote community events that bring people together. Preserve the unique charm that makes downtown Afton special.
City Hall should serve the people—not stand in their way. Government has an important role in protecting the public interest, but it should also respect responsible property owners and work collaboratively with residents. Too often, people feel the process begins with “no.” I believe it should begin with a different question: “How can we make this work responsibly?” That means: Transparent decision-making. Clear, consistent expectations. Respectful communication. Predictable permitting and planning. Listening before deciding. When residents and City Hall work together, everyone benefits.
